Youth from Poltava, Ukraine visited Auschwitz complex

Members of Euroclub from PNVK “Parostok” are involved into a detailed study of World War II History. The team of volunteers conduct tours on exhibition “Anne Frank: Lessons of History” for city students.

In order to deepen their knowledge volunteers visited the memorial complex of Auschwitz-Birkenau located at the territory of the largest Nazi concentration camps in Poland.

On 27 January, in the International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the 67th anniversary of Auschwitz liberation students of “Parostok” visited the complex. They attended the Commemoration ceremony and put flowers to the monument. The ceremony was also attended by former camp prisoners and official representatives of many countries. People lit candles and laid wrests with state-colored ribbons. Ukrainian yellow-and-blue wrest was here too. Many ordinary people – students and tourist from different countries also came to pay tribute to Nazi victims. Excursion groups from France, Israel, Germany, Italy, Russia, Ukraine and Spain attended the ceremony and everyone had time to think over prisoners’ fates. The ceremony began with a common pray of Jewish and Catholic priests and was followed with warnings about the importance of preserving the historical memory, pronounced in all European languages.

In addition, during the four-day internship volunteers visited historical museum Shindler’s Factory in Krakow. There they learned city history of war years, saw rare artefacts, photos and things that belonged to a German businessman Oscar Shindler, who saved more than 1000 residents of Jewish Ghetto.

Not only the internship improved Euroclub volunteers’ competence on Holocaust issue, but also it became a background for future educational activities and combating xenophobia on a local level.
